Frequently Asked Questions (Here are answers to the questions we hear most often.)

Your data is valuable, just like your home or car. As identity thieves grow smarter and fraudulent activity becomes more prevalent, so do the requirements for a robust identity monitoring platform.

While there are places that offer free credit and identity monitoring, our proprietary technology goes beyond those basic services, allowing us to proactively monitor your identity and alert you at the earliest signs of fraud so you can take action. And while we can't prevent identity theft, we're experts at helping customers pick up the pieces after theft has occurred. We fully manage customers’ restoration cases, helping them save time, money, and stress.

We know that tracking your own identity is difficult and filled with unknowns, so we’re here to help take the burden off your shoulders so you can live your best life.

Our powerful technology helps detect when an identity may be at an elevated risk for theft and allows us to help you take necessary precautions, including placing fraud alerts, credit freezes, and reviewing credit reports. We go beyond credit monitoring to search for suspicious activity, looking holistically at the financial accounts you use, the social media accounts you log into, and other data sources that could be compromised by others. This allows us to alert you of fraud at its earliest signs.

While different banking institutions offer different levels of identity protection, the majority provide basic fraud protection, mobile alerts, and credit monitoring — which is just one aspect of identity protection.

Allstate Identity Protection goes beyond credit by using proprietary advanced threat intelligence with access to dark web forums where hackers operate. Other key differentiators include Allstate Digital Footprint, social media account takeover, digital exposure reports, and IP address monitoring. Finally, we reimburse funds stolen from HSA and retirement accounts, which are not typically covered by banks.

In addition to keeping tabs on your personal information, our Privacy Advocates are experts at resolving complex cases of identity theft on your behalf. They’re available 24/7 to fully restore compromised identities. And with a $1 million identity theft insurance policy to cover expenses and stolen funds resulting from identity theft, you can rest assured that your identity is fully protected.

No. Allstate Insurance agents are not able to view any information related to our identity protection services, nor will its use impact your insurance coverage or rate.

While data breaches and identity theft are closely linked, they are distinctly different. A data breach is a cyberattack in which personal information is accessed without authorization. This could include anything from names, addresses, and login credentials to financial and credit card information, PINS, medical records, insurance claims and social security numbers, among other things. Breaches can be caused by malware, phishing schemes, security hacks, lost or stolen devices, and other accidents.

Identity theft is the next step after a data breach occurs, although just because personal information may have been exposed in a breach, that doesn’t mean your identity has been stolen. Cyber criminals may use the stolen data to make purchases, steal from bank accounts, and open accounts in the victim’s name.

So, in layman’s terms, data breaches are when someone has access to your personal information. Identity theft is the unauthorized use of that compromised data to commit fraud.

The dark web is a part of the internet that is inaccessible to search engines, and is a place where cybercriminals store, buy, and sell personal information illegally.

There are any number of ways personal information makes its way to the dark web, particularly if you are a victim of malware, remote access Trojans, phishing schemes, keyloggers, a public breach of customer data, and other emerging threats.

We employ bots and human intelligence operatives to scan the dark web and closed hacker forums for compromised credentials, scouring an ever-evolving complex of compromised machines, networks, and web services that Allstate Identity Protection and other leading cybersecurity firms identify. Our surveillance is specifically designed to find personal information like an email address, credit card numbers, and even passwords you use on the dark web.

If we find your personal information on the dark web, we’ll alert you immediately, warning that your identity may be at risk. The sooner you hear about them, the easier it may be to get ahead of a serious problem.

We know that protecting your information is of utmost importance. That’s why we use security software to encrypt the personal information you provide us before and during its transmission through the internet. We only allow information to be submitted for transmission if your browser is compatible with our security software. If your browser is not compatible, you will receive a message indicating your transaction can be completed but at a lower level of security.

The Allstate Identity Protection platform, powered by InfoArmor, has had zero security breaches. No method of transmission over the internet, or method of electronic storage, is 100% secure, however. Therefore, we cannot guarantee its absolute security.

Allstate Identity Protection is available to those that have a Social Security number and reside in the U.S. There is no age limit or floor for enrolled family members; from infants to adult children you support, you and up to four additional family members are covered. You may not enroll your spouse or other family members or dependents who are over the age of 18 into credit monitoring. Any such spouse, adult family member or adult dependent must register for credit monitoring and pass identity verification separately.

Should fraud or identity theft occur, our in-house Privacy Advocates are available 24/7 to fully restore compromised identities, even if the fraud or identity theft occurred prior to enrollment. Please note that while we can help remediate your pre-existing case of identity theft, you would not be eligible for expense or stolen funds reimbursement under the terms of our plans if your identity theft occurred prior to enrollment.

Please refer to the underlying policy and summary of benefits for terms, conditions, and exclusions of coverage, which are available in your online account. Coverage may not be available in all jurisdictions. For more information, see our Terms & Conditions

Yes, in certain instances you may decide that you’d rather manage your case independently, even if, on average, it takes 100-200 hours to resolve identity theft cases on your own.

However, we believe customer care is an essential part of our service. Our Privacy Advocates are highly trained and certified to handle and remediate every type of identity theft. Even with complex cases, we fully manage restoration cases, helping our customers save time, money, and stress.
