When you enter transactions by hand, you can assign categories or tags as you enter the other details about the transaction.

When you download transactions, Quicken assigns categories to the transactions whose payees it recognizes. Still, there may be a few transactions whose payee Quicken won't recognize. You can use the Spending View to quickly identify those transactions and assign categories or tags to them.

To review and assign categories for your latest transactions

  1. Select the Account (or group of accounts) you'd like to work with from the sidebar.
  2. Click the Transactions view if it's not already selected. You should now see a list of your transactions.

  1. From the Status Filter select Last Downloaded.

  1. This will filter your account register to display only transactions that were added during the last download.
  2. Assign categories or tags to the transactions.

To review and assign categories in the Spending or Income View

  1. Select the Account (or group of accounts) you'd like to work with from the sidebar.
  2. Click the Spending view if it's not already selected. You should now see a list of your transactions and a pie chart.

  1. If you have any uncategorized transactions, this will be called out to the left of the pie chart. Click this link or just click on the Uncategorized item on the pie chart or on the chart legend.

  1. Quicken will display a list of all uncategorized transactions. Assign categories or tags to the transactions.

Double-click the transactions to edit then type the desired category into the category or tag field. If you need to add a new category, subcategory or tag, you can type it here. As you assign categories, Quicken removes the categorized transactions from the list.
