Error 1312: "Cannot create the directory.... A file with this name already exists...."

When trying to install Quicken, the following error occurs:

Error 1312. Cannot create the directory . A file with this name already exists. Please rename or remove the file and click Retry, or click Cancel to exit.

Important: Do not close the error message.

To resolve this issue:

  1. Set your Microsoft Windows view to display hidden files and folders:
    • Microsoft Windows 10
      1. Right-click the Windows Start icon.
      2. Choose File Explorer.
      3. Go to the View tab and click on Options.
      4. Select Changes Folder & search options.
      5. Go to the View tab.
      6. Select Show Hidden Files, Folder and Drives; if it's not already selected.
      7. Click OK.
      8. Close the File Explorer window.
    • Microsoft Windows 7
      1. Click the Windows logo (Start button) and select Control Panel.
      2. Click Appearance and Personalization.
      3. Under Folder Options, click Show hidden files and folders. The Folder options window opens with the View tab selected.
      4. Select the Show hidden files and folders option.
      5. Click Apply, and then click OK
      6. Close the Control Panel.
  2. Find the folder named in the error message:
    • Microsoft Windows 7: Click the Windows logo (Start button), enter the folder name given in the error message in the Search box, and press Enter.
  3. In the search results, right-click the folder and select Rename
  4. Rename the folder .old.
  5. In the error message dialog box, click Retry.
