Error 1402: Could not open key

The message Error 1402: Could not open key may occur when attempting to install Quicken.

To resolve, follow these steps:

  1. Restart your computer.
  2. Sign in as a computer administrator.
  3. Exit all running programs and close all browser windows, if applicable.
  4. Temporarily turn off all anti-virus, anti-malware, firewall, desktop search and backup programs that may be running.  If this step concerns you, you may first disconnect yourself from the internet first.
  5. Attempt the Quicken installation again.

If the error persists, it would suggest there is Windows Registry damage.  Run FixIt from the Microsoft Support Site.

If FixIt fails to resolve the error, please contact your local technician or Microsoft Support for assistance in resolving your Windows Registry damage.
