How Do I Transfer My Financial Information Once I've Upgraded?

One of the benefits of upgrading Quicken is the ability to carry over your financial information from a prior version. This information is stored in a Quicken Data File (or QDF) which can be opened and converted for use in Quicken for Windows 2017. Your Quicken Backup Files can also be converted!

Upgrading From Quicken for Windows 2016 Release 8 Or Newer

If you are upgrading from Quicken for Windows 2016 Release 8 or newer, a conversion is not necessary. Data files from these releases are already compatible. They will simply open in Quicken 2017 without requiring additional steps.

  1. After installing and registering Quicken, you will see the following screen:

  2. Select “Open a data file located on this computer” and click “Get Started.” Locate your data file and open it. The file will be automatically restored and populate your financial information into Quicken without requiring a conversion. (If you cannot find your file, Quicken can help you locate it, just click here)

 

Upgrading From Quicken for Windows 2013 - 2016 Release 7

If you are upgrading from Quicken for Windows 2013 through 2016 Release 7, there are a few extra steps necessary to transfer in your financial information. And we have them covered below. (Don’t worry, a backup of your file will be created before the conversion.) 

  1. After installing and registering Quicken, you will see the following screen:

  2. Select “Open a data file located on this computer” and click “Get Started.” Locate your data file and open it. (If you cannot find your file, Quicken can help you locate it, just click here

  3. Just click Convert File and sign in with your Intuit ID if prompted. Quicken will take it from there and convert your data file. Please keep in mind that after the data file has been converted, it will no longer open in versions of Quicken prior to Quicken for Windows 2016 Release 8.

 

Upgrading from Quicken for Windows 2012 or Older

Converting your data from older versions of Quicken requires the use of an intermediate version, and possibly two. The procedure for this can be found here
