Import Quicken Essentials Transactions Into OS X Lion Compatible Quicken Mac 2007

You can export transactions from Quicken Essentials for Mac and import the data directly into the OS X 10.7 Lion compatible Quicken Mac 2007.

What data will not export from Quicken Essentials for Mac?

  • Budgets
  • Reports
  • Currency settings
  • Category tax line item assignments
  • Scheduled transactions
  • Financial institution records
  • Tags
  • Online payee information
  • Download references attached to transactions
  • Account settings such as Hide Account, and online enabled account user IDs and passwords

First, backup your Quicken Essentials data if you plan to import data from Quicken Essentials for Mac into an existing Quicken Mac 2007 data file.

  • Choose File > Backup > To Disk...
  • Backup your data file to either your hard drive or external media.

Next, export your data from Quicken Essentials for Mac

  1. Once you have backed up your Quicken Essentials data, open your Quicken Essentials data file in Quicken Essentials.
  2. Confirm you are on the latest release of Quicken Essentials.
    • Click on Quicken menu > About Quicken. The version needs to be 1.7.1 or higher to proceed. If it is not, choose Quicken menu > Check for Updates... to install the latest update.
  3. Select File menu > Export > Export to Quicken 2007.
  4. Select a location to save the Quicken Mac Transfer Format (.qmtf) file.
  5. Important: If you plan to add your Quicken Essentials data (not start a new data file), select a date range of transactions to export. Choose a date range for transactions that are not currently in your Quicken Mac 2007 data file. Otherwise, overlapping dates may cause duplicate transactions once you import the Quicken Essentials data.
Note: Choose a date one day before the desired date. For example, if you would like data between the dates 1/1/2012 - 1/30/2012, select 12/30/2011 - 1/30/2012.
  6. Once you have selected the date range and location to save the file, click on Save.
  7. Close Quicken Essentials.

Then, import your data into Lion Compatible Quicken Mac 2007

  1. Open Lion Compatible Quicken Mac 2007.
  2. Open a new data file or your prior Quicken for Mac 2007 data file. This data file is where the Quicken Essentials data will be imported.
  3. Backup your Quicken Mac 2007 data file if you have not yet done so.
  4. Choose File menu > Import > From Quicken Essentials.
  5. Navigate to the location of your Quicken Essentials for Mac .qmtf file, highlight it, and then click Open.
  6. The conversion process may take a moment or two, depending on the size of the file.

What to check for after importing your data:

    Account types

Account types may change in the data transfer process. For example, Money Market and Savings accounts may come in as a Bank account; a Line of Credit account may come in as a Credit Card. You can restore these account types from the account list.

    Account names

If an account name is different in Quicken Essentials and Quicken Mac 2007, a new account will be created when you import.  For example, if you have a Bank of America account and in Quicken Essentials you call this account "BofA" and in Quicken Mac 2007 you call it "Bank of America," two separate accounts will be listed after you import. If this happens, restore a backup in Quicken Mac 2007, verify the account names are identical in both programs, then import your data again.

    Duplicate entries

If you imported your Quicken Essentials data into an existing Lion Compatible Quicken Mac 2007 data file, overlapped dates may cause duplicate entries. If you find duplicate entries, you can manually delete these duplicates.
