Your computer has a fixed amount of memory available to operate programs. This is not the same as the space on your hard drive. Each time you open a program, you're taking away part of that available memory. When memory runs low, your computer may begin running slowly or stop working entirely.
To free up memory:
- Restarting your computer is the fastest and best way to reset (or release) your memory allocation.
- If you do not want to reboot, close any applications that are running that you don't need at the moment. You can always restart them later. Tip: If you tend to leave a handful of programs open on your desktop, get in the habit of minimizing them when they're not in use. In general, a minimized program uses less than half the PC memory of a maximized program.
