"Quicken Cannot Open Your Data File" When Launching Quicken for Mac

Overview

You might receive the following message when attempting to launch Quicken Essentials:

Quicken Cannot Open Your Data File.

Instructions

To resolve this message be sure you have updated to the latest release, and then follow these steps:

Check the location of the data file:

    1. If the file is on a CD or USB drive, copy it to a location on your hard drive.
    2. Open the file from the hard drive.

    Ensure that the file is not Locked:

    1. Browse to the location of the data file.
    2. Hold down the Control key and click on the data file.
    3. Choose GET INFO from the list of options.
    4. Under the General section confirm that LOCKED is not checked.

    Ensure that the file has Read & Write permissions:

    1. Open the Sharing & Permissions section of GET INFO.
    2. Click your Mac User Name in the Name column.
    3. Confirm the Privilege shows Read & Write.

    Delete the Quicken for Mac Preferences:

    1. In Finder, choose Go > Home.
    2. Open the Library folder.
    3. Open the Preferences folder.
    4. Drag the com.intuit.quicken.(product year).plist file to the Trash.

    If the problem persists:

    1. In Finder, choose Go > Home.
    2. Open the Library folder.
    3. Open the Application Support folder. 
      Note: Be sure your Quicken data file is not in this folder.
    4. Drag the Quicken folder to the trash.

    Tip: To find out which version of Quicken you are using, open Quicken go to Help menu and select About Quicken.
