Message: Cannot open the data file because it is in use by some other application

When attempting to open your data file in Quicken, you may receive the following message:

Cannot open the data file because it is in use by some other application.

Solution

Reboot your computer. The Quicken program may be "stuck" open while attempting to open your data file. If that does not resolve the problem, proceed to the following steps based on your operating system.

  1. Right-click the Windows Start button, and select File Explorer.
  2. Click the View tab.
  3. Under Show/hide section, checked the box for Hidden items

Next, we will delete 3 folders: CONFIG, DATA & LOG.  These folders and the content within the folders are all in the same location and will be recreated automatically when necessary.

  1. Navigate to:
    • Windows 10: Local Disk (C:) > Users > (User Name) > Appdata >Roaming > Intuit > Quicken
