When attempting to open your data file in Quicken, you may receive the following message:

Cannot open the data file because it is in use by some other application.

Solution

Reboot your computer. The Quicken program may be "stuck" open while attempting to open your data file. If that does not resolve the problem, proceed to the following steps based on your operating system.

Windows 10

First, we want to make sure the folders on your system are not hidden (so we can find them).

    1. Right-click the Windows Start button, and select File Explorer.
    2. Click the View tab.
    3. Under Show/hide section, checked the box for Hidden items

Next, we will delete three folders: CONFIG, DATA & LOG.  These folders and the content within the folders are all in the same location and will be recreated automatically when necessary.

    1. Navigate to:
      • Windows 10: Local Disk (C:) > Users > (User Name) > Appdata >Roaming > Intuit > Quicken
    2. Right-click on CONFIG and select Delete.  If the system asks if you are sure, select Yes.
    3. Repeat this process for the DATA and LOG folders.
    4. Reopen Quicken.

    Windows 7

First, we want to make sure the folders on your system are not hidden (so we can find them).

      1. Right-click the Windows Start button, and select Explore.
      2. Select the Organize menu, and select Folder and Search Options.
      3. Click the View tab and select Show hidden files and folders (located under Files and Folders > Hidden Files and folders.
      4. Click OK.

Next, we will delete 3 folders: CONFIG, DATA & LOG.  These folders and the content within the folders are all in the same location and will be recreated automatically when necessary.

      1. Navigate to: Local Disk (C:) > Users > (User Name) > Appdata >Roaming > Intuit > Quicken
      2. Right-click on CONFIG and select Delete.  If the system asks if you are sure, select Yes.
      3. Repeat this process for the DATA and LOG folders.
      4. Reopen Quicken.
