How do I categorize a transfer? (Quicken for Windows)
When you transfer money between accounts, one account balance increases and the other account balance decreases—but your net worth remains the same. Quicken records a transfer in your "transfer from" account register and creates a parallel transaction in the "transfer to" account.
The category field in a transfer transaction shows the other account involved (for example, if the current account is the transfer to account, the category field displays the transfer from account).
Can a transfer be categorized?
You can't categorize a transfer with an income or expense category. When you transfer money from one account to another, you're not spending or receiving money--you're simply moving it. (Instead of an income or expense category, the name of the account you're moving the money to or from appears in the Category field in the register.)
You can use Quicken tags with transfers, however. Tags allow you to group transactions without categorizing them as income or expense.
