How do I upgrade to a newer version of Quicken for Windows?
Learn how to upgrade your Quicken software and understand how your financial data transfers over.
What's the difference between a product version, upgrade and update?
A Quicken version is the full version of Quicken software that you’ve purchased and installed on your system. For example, Quicken for Windows Premier 2017 is a version of Quicken.
An upgrade is when you go from one version of Quicken to a newer version of Quicken. For example, if you have Quicken for Windows Premier 2017 and you purchase and install the Subscription Release of Quicken for Windows Premier, you have upgraded your Quicken version to the Subscription Release of Premier.
An upgrade is also when you go to a higher tier of your Quicken subscription. For example, if you have Deluxe and you purchase Premier, you have upgraded to a higher subscription tier.
An update is also called a Release or Patch. Updates improve program functionality and fix known bugs. The latest update to your Quicken program can be obtained from our Quicken Software Update site, free of charge.

What happens with my old Quicken file and accounts after I upgrade?
It'll all move over to your new version.
You're either going to restore a backup you made or just open your data file in the new version of Quicken. Very simple. The first time you open it, your data gets converted to work in the new version -- automatically. More details can be found here.

What if I want to start with a new file after I upgrade?
You can do that, too. Your original file will stay right where it is in case you still need to access it.
After opening and registering Quicken:
- Choose File menu > New Quicken File.
- On the next prompt, select New Quicken File.
- Click OK.
- In the File name field, enter the name you want for the new file.
- Click OK.
What if I have a really old version of Quicken? Am I still safe to upgrade?
For the most part, yes.
The longer you go between upgrades, the more complex the conversion process can be. But don't worry -- you can install a version of Quicken in-between so the leap between versions isn't so extreme.
Specifically, if your old version is Quicken for Windows 1998 - 2003, you'll want to install Quicken 2004 before installing your new software. We provide you with a copy of Quicken 2004 and instructions here.
