Downloaded Security Quotes Are Not Updating Current Price

You may have downloaded security quotes but the current price was not updated.


There are several reasons some securities do not update when you download quotes:

  • The security is not available for quotes download in Quicken.
  • The security is missing a ticker symbol or has an incorrect ticker symbol.
  • The security is not selected for quotes download in the One Step Update dialog.
  • The security price history is damaged.
  • You are downloading on weekends or after business hours.

Check if the security is available for download

Not all securities are available for quotes download to Quicken.  If you are not getting quotes for a lesser known stock or an ADR you can test the quotes download in a new data file.  Information about creating a new data file is available on our support site.


Check for the correct ticker symbol

  1. In Quicken, choose Investing menu, then Security List.
  2. In the Security List, scan your securities to make sure they all have  correct ticker symbols.
  3. If a security is missing a ticker symbol, or if you are not sure you have the correct ticker symbol for a given security, then click Edit in the toolbar.
    • Enter a missing ticker symbol in the Symbol field.
    • Next to the Symbol field, click Look Up to verify the ticker symbol is correct.

Check if the security is set up to download

  1. In Quicken, choose Tools (Online in older version), then One Step Update.
  2. In the One Step Update dialog, click Select quotes to update.
  3. In the Customize Online Updates dialog, click the Quotes tab.
  4. Make sure there is a checkmark next to each security for which you want to download prices. To set up all of your securities for download, click Mark All.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Click Update Now.

Note: Quicken retains your settings in the Customize Online Updates dialog until you change them again. The next time you download security prices, any securities that are not selected will not be updated.

Check if the security price history is damaged

If the security price history is damaged, you can delete the price history for a security and rebuild it.

  1. Click on Investing on the top menu bar (using Classic Menus), then Security List.
  2. Select the security that is not downloading and then click Edit.
  3. Change the ticker symbol to an invalid ticker symbol such as SSSS, and then click OK.
  4. In the Symbol Change Affects Price history dialog, click on Delete quotes, and then click OK.
  5. Select the security that is not downloading and then click Edit.
  6. Change the ticker symbol to the correct symbol, and then click OK.
  7. Download quotes.
  8. Recalculate the investment register to rebuild your price history.

    : Recalculating the investment account will populate the price history for dates with transactions in the investment account. If you would like to have price history for dates without transactions, you can import security values to Quicken. Search in Quicken help for "import data" for information on importing security prices. Price histories are available for download from Yahoo Finance or other financial web sites.

If you are still not able to download quotes, rebuild the Quicken price history file (QPH).  Information about rebuilding the QPH file is available on our support site.

If you download on weekends or after business hours:

Quicken will download the most recent available price, unless there has been no change since your last download. For dates when the market is closed and prices are not available, for example on weekends, Quicken displays est (for estimated price) in the Portfolio's Quote/Price column. This tells you that this price has not been updated for the date displayed in the As of field.
