Paying bills with Quicken for Mac is easier than ever – you can now track and pay bills without ever leaving Quicken. Schedule payments in advance and avoid the cost of stamps! Quicken for Mac 2016 and 2017 support Direct Connect Bill Pay with almost 500 financial institutions; to see if your bank supports Direct Connect Bill Pay, click here to see the full list.  

NOTE: Quicken doesn’t charge for Direct Connect Bill Pay, but some banks do—be sure to check with your bank to confirm if there are fees for using Bill Pay with Quicken for Mac.

 

NEW!: Quicken for Mac 2017 now offers Quicken Bill Pay and Direct Connect Bill Pay.  You'll need to sign up for Quicken Bill Pay before following the steps below.

 

Pay Bills with Direct Connect

Direct Connect Bill Pay has many benefits, including:

  • Ability to create payment transactions before payment is due, so that you never miss a payment.
  • Paying your bills from any Bill Pay-enabled account in Quicken.
  • Pay merchants, small businesses, or individuals at any time.
  • Transfer funds to and from your accounts at the same bank.
  • Pay your bills from the same place you manage all of your personal finances, so you don’t have to go to your bank’s website.

 

Getting Started

  1. Check that your bank supports Bill Pay and find out if your bank charges any kind of fee for Direct Connect Bill Pay.
  2. Confirm that your account is set up with Direct Connect:
    • Go to the account you want to pay your bills from.
    • Click on the Settings button on the bottom toolbar.

    • Look for Connection Type:
      • If it says Direct Connect, you can skip to “Activate Bill Pay” in the guide below
      • If it says Quicken Connect, then you’ll need to change it to Direct Connect:

 

Changing to Direct Connect

  1. In the Account Setting sheet, click on Change Connection Type.

  2. The Setup Financial Institution sheet will appear. Click on the Options button.

  3. Change the connection type by clicking on the Direct Connect radio button.

  4. Enter in the log-in credentials for your bank and click Continue.

  5. You’ll see the Accounts Found sheet and Quicken will ask you to link the account(s) found with your existing Checking account in Quicken.  Use the dropdown to link the correct account, and click Continue.

  6. Click Finish to complete the change.

You’re now ready to activate Bill Pay for your account(s)!

 

Activate Direct Connect Bill Pay

If the Connection Type is Direct Connect, the Bill Pay status icon is green, and the status is On, Bill Pay is enabled and your account is ready to pay bills online!

            Using Bill Pay in Quicken for Mac 2016 and 2017

If the Bill Pay status icon is red and the status is Off – Bill Pay is not enabled. In this case:

  1. Click the Check for Bill Pay button. If the status remains Off, it means that Bill Pay is supported for this account, but is not yet enabled by the bank. Contact your bank to enable Direct Connect Bill Pay for your account in Quicken.
  2. Once you've confirmed that your bank has enabled Direct Connect Bill Pay for your account, click the Check for Bill Pay button again, and the indicator should change to On. You're now set to use Bill Pay.
  3. If the Bill Pay status icon is red and the status is Not Available, Bill Pay is not supported by your bank, or may not be supported for the selected account type.
  4. If your bank is listed as supported and/or if other accounts from the same bank are enabled, contact your bank and check whether Direct Connect Bill Pay is available for your account.

 

Paying Bills

With Direct Connect Bill Pay, you can pay bills from your account register, where you review and manage all of your banking transactions.

  1. Select the account you want to use to pay your bills.
  2. Click on the + button on the bottom toolbar to add a new transaction.
  3. Click the blue Edit Details button to open the transaction.
  4. A new tab appears at the top of the transaction area called Online Payment.  Click on the Online Payment tab.

  5. In the Online Payment tab, click on the Online Payment checkbox.

  6. Type the payee you want to pay using Quicken, and then click on Add new Online Payee in the drop down menu.

  7. Complete the information required to send the online payment, including the account number, if needed. Click Done when finished.

  8. Click on the date you want the payment to be deducted from your account and the pay date.  In the example below it takes about a week before the payment will arrive.

  9. Once finished, click on the Pay Now button to create the transaction.
  10. In the register, the payment will now be marked as ready to be sent, and an envelope icon appears.

  11. Click on the Update Account button to send the payment to the bank.

  12. The icon will change to the closed envelope icon once the payment is sent.

  13. Finally, the status changes to a blue envelope once it is paid.

  • Make payments from up to 10 accounts
  • Transfer funds between accounts

Tip: To find out which version of Quicken you are using, open Quicken go to Help menu and select About Quicken.
