Quicken for Windows: Why did my opening balance change after changing to EWC+, or reactivating an EWC+ account?

Overview

When changing your bank connection to EWC+, as with Chase and Bank of America recently, Quicken may adjust your opening balance. This can occur if you've modified your opening balance in the past. This can also occur if you have Deactivated and Reactivated your EWC+ account.

Some users are reporting that this opening balance adjustment causes issues when reconciling the account. We are working to make changes in a future release to prevent these reconcile issues from arising.

You can manually adjust your opening balances and correct this issue

Non-investment accounts:

  1. Open the account you want to use by clicking the name on the account bar.
  2. Find the earliest transaction in the register. This is easiest to find if you sort your transactions by Date.
  3. Click the Deposit field, change the amount, and then click Save.

Investment accounts:

  1. Open the account you want to use by clicking the name on the account bar.
  2. Find the earliest transaction in the transaction list. This is easiest to find if you sort your transactions by Date.
  3. Click Edit, use the investment transaction dialog to change the opening amount, and then click Enter/Done.

If you are unsure of the previous account balances

You can view a backup file to confirm these balances:

  1. Back up your Quicken file.
  2. Restore a pre-migration file to another location (like the Desktop), selecting the Just looking... option when prompted.
  3. Scroll to the top of each account that has been migrated and make note of the opening balance, date, and amount.
  4. Restore your current Quicken file.
  5. Examine each migrated account and correct any opening balances as needed.
